There seems to be a general rule at the gym and that's women should stick to cardio and not touch the weights as they're 'manly'
Weight training helps keep your metabolism turned on for up to 48 hours post workout, meaning your food will be burnt off even outside of the gym!
But do not be disheartened if initially you seem to be staying at the same weight or gaining slightly.
Muscle weighs more per square inch than fat, so whilst your weight might not be dropping very quickly, your clothes are feeling baggier and you are seeing a healthier, slimmer and better toned you in the mirror. So don't worry what the scales tell you!
"Is weight training right for women? I don't want to turn into the Hulk"
Weight training is just as suitable for women as it is for men. Many women are wary of taking it up for fear that increased muscle means increased masculinity, this is not the case.
Testosterone is a very important factor in the development of muscle shape, so as women have very low levels of this hormone their muscles develop differently, meaning a little resistance training will not lead to a bulky, butch physique.
Weight lifting positives:
Builds lean muscle,
Helps stop saggy/loose skin,
Switches your metabolism on for hours
So why not lift weights? Who cares what the men think in the gym! Most are just scared you'll lift more than them!
